Shorty’s Views: Christian Community Health Center

Christian Community Health Center - South Side Chicago

Christian Community Health Center (CCHC) is one of the best kept secrets in Chicago.  Their mission is “to provide high quality primary healthcare and related services to the community regardless of the ability to pay.”  They have three health centers in Chicago, South Holland and Calumet City.  They also provide social services as well as supportive services for women in prostitution and women and children who are victims of domestic violence.

I have been a patient with and without insurance, and can honestly say that I have been treated with respect and courtesy by everyone I encountered.  And my waiting times to see my providers were the same.  Long.  This is because they don’t turn away walk-in patients.

The providers were great.  Explanation was given as checkups were performed.  They make sure you understand what is going on with your body by answering all questions in easy to understand terms.  Dr. White is da’ bomb!

Best of all, they have income-based fees so if you are uninsured, you can get a checkup with a $20 co-pay per visit.  You do have to pay for your own medication which can also be purchased at a low price from American Pharmacy which is located inside the health center.

One last thing, they offer lots of health workshops and programs.  The only not-so-cool thing is – they don’t get the word out to the community effectively.  So, you either have to do a drive-by reading or call the center to find out about events.
