Equality Now Seeks A Washington DC Liasion – Apply Through 4/16

Equality Now

Equality Now, an international human rights organization dedicated to ending violence and discrimination against women globally, is seeking a full-time liaison based in Washington, DC for a period of one year, renewable, with expertise and experience in working to ending human rights abuses against women and girls, in particular the trafficking in women and girls. The Coordinator will report to the Executive Director and Director of Programs of Equality Now each based in New York.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Follow developments in Equality Now’s campaigns in its four program areas – Discrimination in Law, Sexual Violence, Female Genital Mutilation and Trafficking – and strategize on advancing the organization’s campaigns through advocacy in Washington, DC;

• Monitor developments in the work of the United States’ government and other relevant entities that impact or could impact the rights of women and girls around the world and the work of Equality Now;

• Develop relationships and organize meetings as needed with influential stakeholders in Washington DC (including the White House, Congress, and the State Department) and other relevant actors, for specific campaigns, or generally in connection with advancing Equality Now’s work, as the case may be.

• Develop Equality Now’s work to ending trafficking in women through legislation, advocacy and international coordination, as needed, which would include expanding relevant contacts on Capitol Hill, the State Department and other government institutions, as well as non-governmental organizations and entities.

• Conduct outreach to organizations working on women’s and girls’ issues based in Washington DC to develop and maintain network partnerships and contacts for Equality Now’s work;

• Generate and implement agreed-upon advocacy action plans;

• Generate drafts of potential Women’s Actions and other materials for Equality Now;

• In collaboration with Equality Now’s Communications Director, monitor and target media on issues relating to Equality Now’s work;

Additional Qualifications:

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

1. Education: J.D. or Master’s degree, preferably in international relations or international human rights.

2. Experience & Knowledge:

• 3-5 years of experience of legislative and policy monitoring with direct access to Capitol Hill.

• Experience working in human rights or working with the women’s movement domestically or internationally

• Knowledge of human rights violations against women and international human rights instruments.

3. Skills:

• Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English. Foreign language a plus.

• Ability to work effectively in a team from an off-site location.

• Excellent analytical, conceptual and writing skills.

• Computer skills.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary for this position is $68-$78K, depending on work experience, plus health benefits for a one year contract, with a review and possibility of renewal at the end of the contract term.
