Chicago’s Black Creative Community Was Absent from the 2012 Chicago Creative Expo

 2012 Creative Expo

I attended the Chicago Creative Expo this weekend and had a blast. There were creatives from all walks of Chicago – arts, literature, film and media, and education. There were financial, legal, health and other service providers that cater to this community in attendance. Many city departments came to share their services and resources. One group that was absent, in my opinion, was Chicago’s black creative community. Actually, there were quite a few groups missing, but I’d like to speak on the group I know best.

This was a disappointment to me because I know many writers, publishers, arts organizations, and dance groups that could have benefited from the exposure. It was great to see the few in attendance, but there were very few.  I do know that many conversations took place over this two-day period, which would have been great for educating all the visitors about your products and services. You could have also been a presenter to share your expertise.

So, why was the black community absent?

  1. Were you unaware of the Creative Expo?
  2. Were you just not interested?

Speak to me.
