FYI: Squatters Have Rights, Too!

squatter

Guess what? If a squatter occupies your property unauthorized and unannounced, you CANNOT put them out.  According to dictionary.com, a squatter is “a person who settles on land or occupies property without title, right, or payment of rent.”  As a property owner, you have to treat these people the same way you would paying tenants.  It’s not right, but it’s the law.

  1. So, does this mean that someone can move into my vacant property without my permission, and I would have to go through the same proceedings at I would with a payment tenant?? That’s bull!!!

  2. I don’t think this is accurate. Can you provide a link to a law that gives squatters these rights? If this were true, squatting would be widespread.

  3. I haven’t called 311 yet, but I had another thought on squatting. People don’t do it because they don’t know they can. Which is why it isn’t being done on a large scale. But, I”ll check this out.
