In Chicago, Illinois and across the US the drive to boost low-wage workers’ wages is unprecedented.
But why now?
And who are the people who would benefit from a wage boost that is on the city-wide ballot in March? And who are the groups backing and leading them?
Maybe you’ve covered their events, but wondered about the bigger picture. Or maybe you or your community group wants to know more about these efforts.
So, please join us on Tuesday, Feb. 11 for a workshop to hear from these workers and organizers and supporters. We will also be looking at what this means for the workers and their communities, where they work, and what it says about the Chicago workplace in 2014.
Besides a panel discussion led by Natalie Moore of WBEZ, about two dozen groups will be on hand to talk about their work and who they speak for.
They represent a surge here of workers asking for better wages and conditions. It’s a movement of fast food workers, of retail and supermarket workers, of domestic workers, of day laborers, of warehouse workers, of waiters and kitchen staff and on and on.
This is a one-time chance to meet a broad array of groups of individuals involved in one of today’s key issues. We will be providing a guide to these groups as well as the data that tells us about the economics driving this issue and workers.
We gather at 6 pm, Feb. 11 at Columbia College, Chicago, at 618 S. Michigan, Stage Two, Chicago
The Chicago Headline Club is also sponsor of this event
