This is a story told to me by a friend on Friday, May 27, 2011.
While walking to the red line train on 95th Street in the 2:00 hour, he saw a bunch of kids in Abbot Park following a fight by students that attend Harlan Community Academy. He didn’t see any police officers around, so he kept on walking and saw an officer sitting in his car. He told the officer what was happening. The cop responded that there were officers in the park. When my friend told him that no officers were around, the officer was pretty nonchalant. He didn’t even call for help.
Needless to say, my friend was angry and called me to share. He also told me to check the papers today to see if I read about any teens being beating. The only problem with that is – news media sources don’t care that much about South Side happenings so it may not appear. And, the officer’s reaction would have been waaaaaay different if he was on the North Side.
What would you have done in this situation? Do you know any of the students involved?
