In the January 14, 2011 Huffington Post article, mayoral candidate Rahm Emmanual said that he would pass a local version of Dream Act should he grace the 5th floor of City Hall. The Dream Act “gives young illegal immigrants a path to citizenship if they enroll in college or enlist in the military.” Since noting has been determined in Washington, Mr. Emmanual is looking to create history here in Chicago.

According to the article, Emmanual stated, “Just because Congress has yet to pass the Dream Act doesn’t mean we will wait for progress in Chicago.” He also Emanuel said, “All children in Chicago deserve to have access to a quality education, and we will make sure they have that opportunity.” This would give them “access the same financial aid opportunities as every other child.”

My response may be off topic, but I had a reaction to the statements about access to education and financial aid opportunities.

Hey Rahm, I have a couple questions for you:

  1. When you say that “All children in Chicago deserve to have access to a quality education,” are you referring to illegal immigrants only or  ALL children? Because if you truly mean ALL children, then you need to start on the South Side.  Can our children get the same access you are promising the beneficiaries of the Dream Act?
  2. Since you are feeling generous and offing financial aid opportunities, how are you going to make that happen when there is little money for current students who are United States citizens  to continue their education?

Don’t get me wrong,  I feel that everyone should have an education, but I also think you should take care of home first. As for access to quality education, I feel you should start with the South Side.

What are you thoughts about Mr. Emmanual’s promise for access to quality education and financial aid opportunities?
