Chesterfield Community Council is proud to present its 11th Annual Silas Purnell College Expo. The event will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Tuley Park located at 90th & King Drive on September 19, 2015.
Okay, can I just say that while it’s a beautiful thing to encourage young people to continue their education, it’s pretty jacked up that they have to a conversation about what to do when approached by the police.
To me, this says: Congratulations, black or brown young man or young woman, you’re on your way to college. You have survived the challenges of high school and possibly living in the hood. Now, we have to make sure you stay alive by preparing you to deal with the police when they approach you. Not if, but when.
I know this is a reality in the lives of black and brown children, but it sucks because other young people don’t have to have this conversation based on the color of their skin and media images.
I digressed.
Anyway, check out this college fair on September 19th. Contact the Chesterfield Community Council at (773) 651-3958 or www.chesterfieldcommunitycouncil.org or chesterfield@ameritech.net if you have any questions.
And stop back to let me know how it went for you by leaving a comment in the box below.
