Marcie Hill’s “Shorty” blog has been an invaluable resource for me. As a journalist, essayist, and author, much of my work involves shining light on fascinating stories from the Southside of Chicago, stories that have been unjustly ignored by most outlets. Hill’s work has not only given attention and respect to the residents of the Southside, she has also gained the precious trust of many people justifiably suspicious of media. When I approach an interview subject with an introduction from Ms. Hill it is truly a Golden Ticket. But Hill’s work is about more than bridge building, she is also a fine communicator, her writing voice balancing reporting, nostalgia, activism and whimsy. As a herald for the promise of the Southside, Shorty stands tall.
